CSOs urge Bauchi govt to lift embargo on employments

A call has gone to the Bauchi State Government to lift as a matter of urgency lift the embargo placed on employment in the state, particularly in the health and education sectors.

The call was made on Friday by the Forum of Executive Directors of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), which declared that it was long overdue for the state government to do so.

Addressing a press conference at the Press Centre of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Bauchi, chairman of the Forum, Sodangi Chindo, said that CSOs in the state supported the Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed administration’s efforts to sanitise the state civil service’s payroll.

He, however, submitted that the administration should find a way to employ more people with a view to bridging the gap in manpower, which he described as inadequate, in the two sectors.

Chindo lamented that as against the 1,208 numbers required in health facilities across the state, only 109 are currently serving in the facilities.

He noted that the situation has overwhelmed health workers to the extent that one person performs the work of about 10 persons.

“The government must find a way to employ while they are cleaning the payroll. The situation is very pathetic because what we have in our health centres is that you find one person doing the work of 10 persons, which is not supposed to be so.

“While we support this administration’s commitment in sanitising the employee payroll, we call on His Excellency, not to use it as an excuse to continue the already overdue embargo on employment, especially in the critical sectors of education, health, where life is at stake every minute, every hour, every day,” Chindo said

He commended the state government for creating the enabling environment that attracts partners to the state through the peace being enjoyed in the state, budgetary allocations and commitment to the payment of counterpart funds.

The Forum chairman, however, appealed to the government to increase budgetary allocation to the health sector, informing that this has nosedived from 15 percent to 10.5 percent.
